By Patrick Oyee THE General Manager, Uganda Oil Seeds Producers and Processors Association (UOSPA), Peter Otim Odoch, has hailed farmers in Lira and Apac districts for being lead producers of vegetable oil in the country. He said out of the 73,000 metric tonnes of oil seed raw materials produced and sold to millers in the last season, over 35,000 metric tonnes were got from farmers in the two districts.
Otim was addressing a workshop for oil seed contractors drawn from the two districts held at Garden Inn in Lira. It was to review the oil seed multiplication activities for the previous season following a similar one held last year in September in the town. Otim said domestic production of raw materials and vegetable oil in the country has gone up from 5% to over 40% in one year. He appealed to farmers to redouble their efforts to earn more.
He said UOSPA was collaborating with farmers to identify high yielding variety of sunflower and soya bean on-farm trials. Otim said UOSPA was trying to address the issue of linking the farmers to markets by rehabilitating some rural feeder roads in the two districts which lead to high production areas of soya bean and sunflower.
